RESEARCH PROGRAMS

The monies generated through WHITE BUFFALO 's services are used for wildlife related research. Current research projects are:

  • Evaluating contraceptives and anti-fertility agents as a management tool for locally overabundant deer populations, and determining under what parameters this technology is practical.
  • Assisting the Mongolian Academy of Sciences and the Denver Zoological Foundatioon in capturing Argali Sheep and fitting them with radio collars to assess their movements and habitat usage so as to determine the feasibility of re-establishing the population.
  • Design and assist in implementation of a wild boar management program in Bhutan. Will train Bhutan National Park personnel to capture and fit GPS collars on sows for monitoring purposes. This photo shows Dr. DeNicola explaining proper trapping procedures.
Areas of past research are:

  • Assessing techniques to control Lyme Disease, such as the use of 4-poster feeder devices that apply an acaracide called Amitraz on a deer's head and neck when it comes into contact with the rollers during feeding.
  • Assessing behavioral responses of urban nuisance female raccoons when excluded from occupied dwellings. Specifically, where do they go? Do they retrieve their young? Do they return to human-occupied structures?
  • Assisting in the administrative and field components of feral animal eradication programs on the Galapagos, Santa Catalina and Santa Cruz Islands.
